BHS recognized
for quality
and safety
A LEADER IN PATIENT
care and quality, Butler
Health System has once again been recog-
nized nationally. • Our flagship hospital, Butler
Memorial Hospital, was recently awarded a Sil-
ver Plus designation for its ongoing excellence in
treating stroke patients using the American Heart Asso-
ciation’s (AHA) Get With The Guidelines (GWTG) program.
GWTG is a hospital-based quality-improvement program designed
to ensure that hospitals consistently care for stroke patients following
the most up-to-date guidelines and recommendations. The program
provides three modules that address coronary artery disease, heart fail-
ure and stroke. Currently,
more than 2,000 hospitals
use one or more GWTG
modules.
Upon meeting each
module’s criteria, hospitals
are recognized if at least
85 percent of their stroke
patients are treated and
discharged according to
the AHA recommendations. A Silver Plus designation demonstrates that
BMH adhered to established standards of care for stroke for more than
12 consecutive months.
Pennsylvania Act 54
In May, Governor Tom Corbett signed Act
54. The act, which became effective in July, establishes a system to des-
ignate acute-care hospitals as primary stroke centers. BMH has earned
that designation by the Pennsylvania Department of Health because of its
ongoing accomplishments with the GWTG program.
“We are proud that the American Heart Association and the Penn-
sylvania Department of Health have chosen to recognize BMH for
our achievements in their Get With The Guidelines program,” says Ken
DeFurio, President and CEO of BHS. “Giving our health care profession-
als the tools and reports they need to effectively treat our coronary heart
disease, heart failure and stroke patients can enhance the quality of life for
our community.”
