HCAHPS and core measures
As part of ongoing health care reform, core measures for proven standards of
care have been defined by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services
(CMS). These core measures help to standardize patient care in certain areas
and serve as a baseline for measuring results. They include established, specific
standards of care for areas such as treatment of heart attack and heart failure, sur-
gery care, and care for patients with pneumonia. Hospitals are measured by these
standards and compared to other accredited organizations.
Each quarter, the results are collected and reported as part of the Hospital Con-
sumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS)—a database of
a 27-item survey used to measure the perception of patient experiences while in
the hospital. This national database allows consumers to research a hospital before
having a procedure.
